Think Information. Think Security.

The government has been warned of more hacking attacks following a recent invasion of Vice President Jejomar Binay's website last month.

Hacker group Philker left a message on the Office of the Vice President's website, saying their group "aims to elevate our country's cyberculture and to point out and correct the vulnerabilities of PH websites to protect them from unethical hackers, fraud, false propaganda, and other people with malicious intent."

Kaspersky Lab Global Research and Analysis Team Director Costin Raiu suggested that the government must put up its own defense strategies against cyber attacks on its websites, and must conduct security audits as soon as possible.

Raiu said there should be an anti-DDoS (distributed denial of service) service by increasing the internet bandwidth or purchasing a specific anti-DDoS service plan. DDoS is done by flooding the target website with overwhelming visits (from different sources) until the site crashes.

The website's servers must go offline temporarily to reduce the damage in case vulnerabilities are found, he added.

"Given the past incidents of this kind, it is expected that the attack will consist of a DDoS flood designed to bring down the server and make it unreachable. It’s possible the confidential information will be sought after, so the defense strategies would be multiple," Raiu explained.

He also warned that websites could still be attacked despite the implementation of the best ways to protect them.

"Of course, a highly sophisticated targeted attack will always succeed--this is why there should be mitigation steps as well as disaster recovery procedures--like backups, server replacement/relocation and redundancy,” Raiu added.

Other government websites including Department of Labor and EmploymentPhilippine Nuclear Research InstituteFood and Drug AdministrationTechnical Education and Skills Development AuthorityDepartment of Interior and Local Government, and the Philippine Information Agency have also recently been hacked.
